Innovation & Data Analysis Unit – Projects and Research areas

ext

The Innovation and Data Analysis Unit of the Virgen Macarena University Hospital focuses its activity on the application of innovative techniques, methodologies and technologies in the healthcare field that have an impact on the improvement of people’s health, the better functioning of the system itself and the generation of resources for the sustainability of the healthcare system. Our unit is in a unique position to exploit the clinical data generated in our Hospital. We also collaborate in clinical studies with Services in our Hospital and in Primary Care centres in our reference area. Our areas of interest and expertise are as follows:

  • Interoperability: our unit participates in multiple studies dealing with data standardisation. Of particular note is our participation in the UNICOM project (which is driving the IDMP standard) and our participation as a data partner in the EHDEN project (which is driving the OMOP data model).
  • Big Data y data exploitation: we are involved in multiple projects that leverage clinical, socioeconomic and environmental exposure data of patients at Hospital and Regional level to create predictive models that help anticipate health needs and provide more efficient medical care. We currently have several active projects in diseases such as asthma (GeoHealth, Breath and GeoAsthma projects), lung cancer (LUCIA and IDERHA projects) and cognitive impairment associated with hearing loss (ai4HealthyAging project).
  • Decision support systems and mobile applications: our team has extensive experience in developing and implementing decision support systems integrated with hospital systems to obtain and represent relevant clinical information in an automated way. We have several projects that have developed systems to support patient monitoring that include decision support rules. In this regard, the OncoAnd system, developed to support the decision making of the various Tumour Committees and Subcommittees, stands out. We have also developed several monitoring systems integrated with mobile solutions also developed by our team. These applications make it possible to define educational content, recommendations and also record patient information (quality of life, disease control tests, Patient Reported Outcomes, etc.). In this regard, the Breath project (focused on monitoring asthmatic patients), Cronicare (focused on monitoring patients with COPD, diabetes and multiple pathologies) and Acproand (focused on monitoring patients with prostate cancer) stand out.
